Coachella Valley Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Maria Gandera wrote in a statement that a student used a knife to assault another student Thursday afternoon at the school, located in Salton City.

"It is our understanding that the incident is the result of a dispute between two students and did not represent a specific threat to the wider school community," Gandera wrote.

Gandera said the victim sustained non-life threatening injuries. She confirmed that the school was briefly placed on lockdown to "ensure the safety of all students and staff."

According to Gandera, the student with the knife was detained by police pending an investigation into the incident.
