A valley couple skips the Black Friday deals by donating to a homeless shelter

TDAY GIVE

In the midst of Black Friday shopping, many are thinking about the great deals they can get this holiday season.

News channel 3 spoke to Well in the Desert's garment handler, Gregory Johnson, about what it means to donate bags full of clothing during the holidays.

"Whatever you guys can donate now before you tap the SM on that black Friday key just go through your closet take a moment, take five minutes, grab your items that you haven’t worn that I can pass on to other people," said Johnson.

The Horowitz's, a local couple from Rancho Mirage had a different approach this Friday morning.

“No, I didn’t not go Black Friday Shopping my shopping was in my closet to get cosmetics, clothes, shoes things for the people who are less fortunate," said Horowitz.

Joann Horowitz and her husband decided to donate bags full of clothing to the shelter this holiday season.

“It's cold and we want to make sure everyone has something nice and warm to wear," said Horowitz.

The president of Well in the Desert, Arlene Rosenthal, said not only does the shelter accept clothing but also those leftover Thanksgiving dinners

“We have a lot of people with lots of leftovers and they want to bring them here and we’ll use them and serve them," said Rosenthal.

Some at the shelter look forward to those leftovers.

“I couldn’t not resist the tomatoes, the stuffed tomatoes that someone brought and they were good and I ate alot of those," said Julian Macis, from Palm Springs.

Rosenthal expresses that all donations are welcomed even the food that may be thrown out.

“When people are hungry you don’t drop your standards you make sure to utilize safety rules but most people are really good about that," said Rosenthal.
