Indio Councilman seeks to help street vendor in viral video

A video of a verbal altercation between local residents over a man selling things on the street has gone viral across social media.

The argument stems from a woman who was allegedly harrassing and yelling at a street vendor who was selling supplies along Avenue 42 on the border of Indio & Bermuda Dunes on Saturday.

Some passerbys in a car saw this and confronted her about it.

"He's out here trying to make a living," the passserbys told the woman.

The woman then says she was mad that he was in her neighborhood.

"I don't want him in my neighborhood. You go to Indian Wells, you don't see lawlessness," the woman told the passerbys.

The passerbys responded saying it doesn't matter and instead call the police.

The woman then says, "It does matter, it brings down the quality of life."

The passerbys, a local couple, say they drive down that roadway nearly every day and always see that street vendor working with a smile on his face despite the heat.

After seeing this, Indio Councilman Waymond Fermon took to social media to ask for help in finding the street vendor so he can provide some assistance and "hopefully guide him in the direction of entrepreneurship."

The county and state stay-at-home orders prevent people from selling things on the street.

"So chances are if he is out here selling products, he is probably trying to provide for his family," Fermon said. "So what I want to do is locate this young man and provide some assistance for him and his family."

Fermon also says he wishes to connect the man with the city's CV food truck business manager so that the man can get the proper permitting and license to sell his product when the order is lifted.

"We can make it a learning moment and teaching moment. One small act of kindness can change the trajectory of someone's life," Fermon said.

If you know who the man in the video is, you can reach out to Councilman Fermon at (760)-391-4015, wferman@indio.org, or send a direct message to his Instagram.
