Indio crash causes outage, driver arrested on suspicion of DUI

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) — A driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after crashing into a utility pole early Thursday in Indio, authorities said.

Officers with the Indio Police Department responded around 5:35 a.m. to a vehicle crash on Avenue 42, west of Golf Center Parkway.

Police said a 57-year-old man driving a Kia van veered off the roadway and struck a utility pole, shearing it off.

The driver was transported by ambulance to Desert Regional Medical Center with injuries and was listed in stable condition, authorities said.

The crash caused a power outage affecting nearby residents, though some service had been restored as of Thursday morning.

Eastbound Avenue 42 between Calhoun Street and Golf Center Parkway remained closed while crews worked to replace the damaged utility pole.

Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation, and DUI is suspected. The driver was arrested, cited and released at the hospital.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Indio Police Department.
