Sculpture of Holocaust survivor at the Tolerance Education Center toppled, suspect arrested

The Tolerance Education Center, located in Rancho Mirage, is speaking out about an incident of vandalism that occurred this month.

According to the Tolerance Education Center, a bronze sculpture depicting the center's founder Earl Greif, was "toppled and damaged" on November 19.

Representatives of the center believe that the sculpture, which sheds light on the experience of Holocaust survivors, was torn down during a planned act of antisemitism.

A 46-year-old Thousand Palms man was arrested on Nov. 24 in connection with this vandalism. He has not been officially charged but is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.

The Tolerance Education Center released the following statement regarding this incident:

" The mission of the Tolerance Education Center is to promote tolerance and understanding and reduce bigotry and hate. Since Oct. 7, 2023, we stand squarely with the supporters of democracy and the State of Israel in the ongoing fight against Hamas. This act of aggression and cowardice, whether against our mission, our stand, or our presence in Rancho Mirage, will not deter us from our programming and fulfilling the objectives of tolerance education through Holocaust education as articulated by our founder."

The center is now asking for community support to increase security on the property to prevent future acts of vandalism.
