‘Music Heals’ shop in Palm Springs fundraising for special needs music education

From jazz and rock to r&b, this locally-owned storefront has all your music needs in Palm Springs.

Nonprofit 'Music Heals Inc' runs on a mission of bringing music education to all students on the spectrum. For nearly 15 years, thousands of students have benefitted from the program.

The shop sells vintage vinyl records, clothing and other collector's items. Year-round, proceeds fund music classes and instruments for the Valley's special needs children.

Shop owner, Jason Nutter, says he's seen the power of music transform students self-expression.

"There was this nonverbal girl that I worked with in Hemet, and the whole class would be doing class and dancing and singing, and she would just sit there with her mom. Then I gave her some drumsticks. Before you knew it, she was with the other students, and she became a drummer that played a full drum set," Nutter said.

This holiday season, Nutter hopes to gift all new instruments to students, but he says this year in particular has hit the store hard in terms of sales.

"Almost three years that I've been here, this has been the toughest season. We're into December already and our numbers are down across the board," said G Winston, a store volunteer.
