Indio boxer speaks out after knockout victory stirs up controversy online
INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) - Indio boxer, Jocelyn Camarillo, is sharing her story after a knockout victory last month.
The 19-year-old knocked out opponent, Isis Sio, in the first round in under a minute. Camarillo says the victory celebration quickly turned into shock, after Sio didn't wake up and was later placed into a medically induced coma.
"That's when I guess everything just kind of switched. Someone had told me that she, that they had put her in an induced coma," Camarillo said.
Now, she's speaking out after videos of the knock out have garnered strong attention online.
"When they posted the video, obviously the knockout and then me celebrating, they didn't show the part where I took a knee. I was just getting backlash on social media, saying that I'm heartless."
Camarillo says a lot of criticism came from outside the boxing community, and she now wants to dispel those concerns.
"We weigh the same weight going into weigh-ins. So we were the exact same weight. We were cleared to fight. That's just boxing, you're punching each other. You're not, you know, being nice," she said.
Sio has since been released from the hospital and is recovering.
Now, Camarillo has a message for her and other young girls interested in the sport.
"People are telling her she should give up, that she sucks. When we had spoke, I kind of told her, hey, if there's something that you want to do and pursue, by all means don't let anyone tell you what to do. Like, no one's opinion matters, you know, just yours," Camarillo said.
Her next match is set for May 30th in El Paso, Texas.
