(CNN) — Norway’s tourism board has launched a tongue-in-cheek toilet campaign to show off the country’s most scenic restrooms after US President Donald Trump branded the Nordic nation a “sh*t house country.”
Trump delivered his scathing comments on the campaign trail, days before voters head to the polls for the midterm elections.
He said on Sunday that he would welcome immigrants to the US from some countries, but not Norway “because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize … So I don’t want anybody from Norway.” Trump later said at the same rally: “Norway has become a sh*t house country, actually.”
Now, Visit Norway has embraced the label, asking, “Are these the world’s best sh*t houses?” in an article online that showcases the facilities available in the scenic Scandinavian nation.
Highlighting its campaign on social media this week, the tourist board posted several of the images and wrote: “So, we heard some noise about ‘s…house country’… What can we say, we do have some of the world’s most beautiful and spectacular toilets.”
The Norwegian marketing campaign shows photos and footage of some of the glorious facilities, accompanied by captions such as: “Norway makes sh*thouses great again! These toilets are worth a visit, both when you really have to go – and when you don’t.”
Among the featured bathrooms is that at the Stegastein viewpoint in the Sognefjord region, which the tourist board said has been described as one of the world’s 10 best public toilets by DesignCurial. It also highlights the wave-shaped Ureddplassen on the Helgeland coast.
Described on the site as “architectural masterpieces,” the featured restrooms include a golden one on the island Senja, as well as one that runs on solar power in the Sognefjord area.
Promising “more to come” with regards to restrooms being built to impress, the website concludes: “Norway’s portfolio of spectacular toilets is, as you can see, filled with great examples of how something as boring as a loo can become a tourist attraction.”
The US President has also called Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen “sh*t house countries.” But his attack on Norway seems to have stemmed from losing out on the Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded to South African human rights pioneer Navi Pillay earlier this month.
Trump has repeatedly been reminded by the Norwegians that the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee and not the government of Norway.
