Indio Middle School receives national honor

When it comes to receiving a complete education, it’s good to be a Tiger. Indio Middle School (IMS) joined an exclusive club Friday, being named a 2018 California School to Watch Taking Center Stage, an honor recognizing “middle schools that are academically excellent, developmentally responsive, socially equitable and structured for success,” reads the school’s news release.

The school is just one of just 18 schools across California to earn the honor and the only one in the Coachella Valley.

“We are thrilled to have received this recognition,” said Principal Jesus Jimenez. “Our staff and students have worked very hard in an exciting and challenging middle school program to demonstrate strong student achievement. This ceremony is an affirmation of the fine work so many have done in the school, district and larger community.”

IMS, located at 81-195 Miles Avenue in Indio, serves students in sixth through eighth grade in the Desert Sands Unified School District. IMS is the only middle school with a Pre-Med academy in Riverside County, according to its Facebook page.

The official award presentation will take place on Feb. 27 at 9 a.m. in IMS’ multipurpose room. In June, the school will be recognized in Washington D.C. (The students have made the news in the past for their impressive robotic feats.)
