Modernism Week continues to captivate thousands and features new additions honoring Black History

Modernism week is in full swing and it continues to attract tens of thousands of visitors to the Coachella Valley.

It first started in 2006 as a smart vintage show with about 10,000 people. Event organizers recorded about 160,000 attendees last year, and they're expecting a larger turnout this year!

Palm Springs continues to attract visitors from throughout the world because of its concentrated collection of midcentury homes.

The 'Yoasis' home was one of this year's featured models.

Micheal Ostrow, 'Yoasis' interior designer says, "This house was built in 1965, and it was built by one of the people who designed the whole neighborhood of Indian Canyons."

Visitors throughout the U.S. and dozens of countries, like Jane Ebbern travel to the Coachella Valley just to take in the architecture.

Some of Ebbern's favorite features include, "The seamless indoor, outdoor living, you know, the huge panes of glass, vivid use of color."

The Flannery Exchange, off North Indian Canyon Drive hosted a 'Mad Men' themed party giving guests a taste of decades past.

"This building was actually constructed in early 80s, but when it was reconstructed by us in 2019 the inspiration was midcentury to try and make this building leave the 80s and go back to the 60s," says Michael Flannery.

Erika Flannery says her coffeeshop, Cafe La Jefa made record sales this weekend with all the visitors in town for Modernism Week.

"We broke record sales, like another 30 percent," says Flannery.

As for what's new this year, the Modernism Week committee included a homage to Black History.

"They decided to add this element to modernism with the Motown and just showing the American history of black history during the modernism period," says Coachella Valley honored vocalist, Keisha D.

She shares that soul music and Motown are markers of Modernism, "It kept a whole nation dancing on their feet, and even in times of crisis or war."

From the homes, the parties, the art and the entertainment, Modernism Week continues to captivate thousands.
