Local students participate in International Walk to School Day
Hundreds of students in the Palm Springs Unified School District will be participating in International Walk to School Day Wednesday. Seven elementary schools in the school district are taking part.
The event is aimed at raising awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment.
The following schools are participating:
* Rio Vista Elementary: 6:45 a.m. at Stater Bros on Landau and Vista Chino. SCRAP gallery director, Mayor Stan Henry and city council members, police, fire and EMTs will participate.
* Katherine Finchy: PS Convention Center parking lot at 7:45 a.m.
* Bella Vista: Meet at Mission Lakes and West, Desert Hot Springs at 8 a.m. Bella the Bulldog (mascot) will be there
* Cahuilla: Meet at Starbuck’s at Sunny Dunes (Palm Springs) at 7:30 a.m. for 7:45 a.m. walk
* Cielo Vista: 7:30 a.m. at Demuth Park (Palm Springs)
* Della S. Lindley Elementary: Meet at Denny’s on Varner Road in Thousand Palms at 8 a.m.
* Cathedral City Elementary 7:45 a.m. Dinah Shore at Eagle Canyon.

Walk to School Day was established in the United States in 1997 by the Partnership for a Walkable America. Canada and Great Britain already had walk to school programs in place. In 2000, these three countries joined together to create International Walk to School Day.
