Homicide unit investigating Banning death

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of an inmate at the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department-Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

Deputies said the man was found unresponsive just before 12:30 Sunday morning within the intake area of the jail. Life-saving measures were taken and medical personnel were called, but the man later died. Deputies said there were no signs of foul play.

The man has only been identified as an adult Hispanic male. The identification of the victim will not be released at this time pending notification to the family.

The Riverside Sheriff’s Department-Central Homicide Unit and Smith Correctional Jail Investigators have assumed the investigation. No further details were released.
