Desert X returns in 2019

Desert X is making its way back to the Coachella Valley in 2019.

The Desert X Board of Directors announced Monday that the second edition will open from Feb. 9, 2019 through the end of April 2019.

Returning Artistic Director Neville Wakefield will be joined by Amanda Hunt, Director of Education & Public Programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and Los Angeles-based independent writer and curator Matthew Schum as co-curators.

Jenny Gil, most recently with Faena Art, Miami, will serve as Executive Director. She is charged with overseeing the exhibition’s administration and management.

“The inaugural Desert X was both an honor to work on and an extraordinary journey into the unknown with some of the most significant artists working today. I could not have anticipated the overwhelming response to the exhibition, and the lure of the desert and its endless possibilities continue to inspire me,” said Wakefield. “I want to delve even further into its potential and Amanda and Matthew bring valuable experience and a deep understanding and passion for presenting work in response to landscape, place and larger social and environmental issues.”

This year’s Desert X showcased projects from various artists, extending from the Whitewater Preserve all the way to Coachella.

The exhibition officially came to an end on April 30, with organizers estimating more than 100,000 attending the art sites.

All of the art installations were dismantled shortly after the end of the exhibition except for the popular “Mirage” mirror house, which remained in place in late September but has been ordered by the City of Palm Springs to be removed within 30 days.
