Case against man accused of killing father in Desert Hot Springs put on hold

Criminal proceedings for man accused of beating his father to death in Desert Hot Springs had his mental evaluation hearing continued to next month following a debate over his mental health records.

The prosecution in the case wanted to subpoena 36-year-old Jose Angel Velasco’s mental health records but, Velasco’s attorney objected.

He was arrested and charged with murder in August in Los Angeles for allegedly killing Jose Luis Velasco, a beloved ice cream man.

Jose Luis Velasco was found dead inside his home by sheriff’s deputies on Aug. 1.

Criminal proceedings have been suspended as the court determines whether Velasco is mentally fit to stand trial.

Jose Angel Velasco is due back in court on November 1 when the hearing continues.
