Local students take part in Great California ShakeOut event at Sunnylands

Some local students spent their day getting hands-on training at Sunnylands for Thursday’s Great California ShakeOut.

The training is all aimed at earthquake preparedness and awareness. The students — along with many other Californians — practiced the drop, cover and hold on drill at 10:19 a.m.

Once the drill was finished, health students from Palm Desert High School mobilized to demonstrate first aid and CPR.

“Just remain as calm as I can and assess the scene and just help the person in need that I’m going to be performing the CPR and first aid on,” said Jenna Jenson, a student at PDHS.

Dennis Mileti, a professor emeritus at University of Colorado, specializing in earthquake preparedness, said he was glad to see the students participate in the drill.

“Educating children to know that earthquakes are a part of life in this state is a very wise approach and will have pay off in the rest of their lives.”
