Indio Highway 111 reconstruction project begins Jan. 16
The City of Indio will begin widening and reconstructing a two-mile section of Highway 111 between Rubidoux Street to just west of Madison Street on Jan. 16.
Construction is scheduled to be completed by Thanksgiving this year and work will be suspended between April 11th and May 1st so that all roads are open to traffic for the April music festivals.
According to a press release by the City of Indio, the purpose of the $10.3 million project is set to widen Highway 111 to three lanes in each direction between Rubidoux Street to just west of Madison Street.
New pavement will be implemented, along with new traffic signals, and new sidewalk. The first phase of this project will be between Madison Street and Granada Drive.
“These upgrades and improvements on Highway 111 are important for the future growth and development of Indio along this important corridor that connects us to all parts of the Coachella Valley,” said Indio Mayor Michael H. Wilson. “This will not only accommodate future traffic as we welcome thousands of new families and visitors each year to the largest and fastest growing city in eastern Riverside County, but it will beautify the roadway and make it safer for drivers and pedestrians.”
One lane of traffic will be open from each direction of Highway 111 during construction. Work will not take place on Highway 111 east of Monroe Street until after the April music festivals and to avoid conflicts with events at the county fairgrounds.
