Credibility of key witness scrutinized in Day 12 of Pinyon Pines trial
Day 12 of the Pinyon Pines triple murder trial is underway. Yesterday, Day 11 trial took a technological turn, with Greg Guilette, a telecommunications expert, taking the stand to deliver testimony.
Guilette is a senior analyst at Gladiator Forensics, and his testimony focused on cell tower data that may be able to paint a more accurate picture about the whereabouts of Cristin Smith and Robert Pape on the night of Sept. 17, 2006. The data presented in court allegedly showed the defendants moving in the direction of the Friedli residence on the night of the killings.
Cristin Smith and Robert Pape are both charged with three counts of first-degree murder with special circumstance allegations of taking multiple lives. The 29-year-olds face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted in the killings of Becky Friedli, Vicki Friedli, and Jon Hayward.
The trial continued today with an extensive discussion about the possible testimony of Jeremy Witt, a key witness, and former confidential informant.
Witt’s testimony plays a crucial role in the prosecution’s efforts to convict Cristin Smith. Witt claims that Smith made incriminating statements to him about the triple murder while the two were co-workers at Knott’s Soak City in Palm Springs. Yesterday, the defense counsel moved to have Witt impeached as a witness, questioning Witt’s credibility.
Witt invoked the Fifth Amendment in court so as to not incriminate himself in any open cases against him.
Gregory Ellis, a man who is named in a restraining order against Witt, was brought in to testify about his issue with Witt. Ellis is scheduled to return to court Tuesday for testimony, while other witnesses to be used in Witt’s impeachment exploration are scheduled to be in court on Monday.
