Road Home May Be An Icy One

Travelers planning to visit the San Jacinto Mountains today will need to carry chains, the California Highway Patrol said.

The agency set up chain control along State Route 74 just below Mountain Center due to icy road conditions.

Saturday night’s storm brought less than two inches of snow in the San Jacinto Mountains, said Meteorologist James Thomas of the National Weather Service.

“Idyllwild saw primarily flurries with no accumulation, but we did get reports that the ground was covered with icy, frozen patches,” Thomas said.

Similar frozen conditions existed in the Cajon Pass area of Interstate 15 early today, but caused no crashes, a CHP dispatcher said.

The cold storm dipped temperatures into the 30s throughout much of the Inland Empire, but brought little to no rainfall in the deserts and valleys.

“Riverside County saw only .05 inches to about a tenth of an inch of rain,” Thomas said.

All Riverside County wind advisories expired this morning, Thomas said.
