Valley students help feed starving kids locally, overseas
Middle school students at Sacred Heart School in Palm Desert packed food to be given to starving children here in the Coachella Valley, and across the world, Friday.
Nearly 200 students packed enough meals for 20,000 children, half of which will be given to children living in Mecca and Duroville.
The other meals will be given to the military, to be distributed overseas in places like Haiti and Honduras.
The meals consisted of soy, rice, vitamins, minerals, and dried vegetables. Organizers say it’s a stable and nutritional base, a formula put together by researchers at companies like Cargill, General Mills, and Pillsbury.
The school paired with Kids Against Hunger, a non-profit humanitarian food-aid organization. Kids from grades K-8 spent months raising $2,500 for packaging and food costs.
Students hope the meals will be the first step to self-sufficiency for these children and their families.
Sacred Heart will deliver the packaged meals at a later date.
