DUI suspect rear ends vehicle at Palm Springs checkpoint

An alleged drunk driver rear ended another vehicle that was stopped at a DUI checkpoint in Palm Springs Friday.

While the Palm Springs Police Dept. conducted its checkpoint on the 1100 block of East Tahquitz Canyon Way, a speeding vehicle approached the screening area and hit another vehicle that police had stopped at the checkpoint.

Neither driver was hurt in the crash, but one driver was arrested when police discovered he had been driving drunk. Police arrested 44-year-old Gene Roy Warness of Palm Springs and took him to the Larry D. Correctional Facility in Banning.

More than 230 vehicles were screened. Fourteen vehicles were sent to secondary screening for further investigation. Eight drivers were issued citations for vehicle code violations.
