Man arrested for stealing $200 from Food-4-Less

A 34-year-old Cathedral City man was arrested Thursday after he grabbed money from a cash register at a Food 4 Less grocery store in Indio.

Sergeant Dan Marshall with the Indio Police Department said Nicholas Herrera was taken into custody shortly after running from the store, located at 82124 Highway 111.

The robbery occurred just before 3:30 p.m.

A store employee told police the suspect approached the cash register and demanded money, saying he had a gun. He then reached into the cash register and a struggle over the drawer began.

Officers said Herrera managed to grab $200 cash before running from the store.

Officers with the Indio Police Department set up a perimeter around the store and spotted Herrera near the Los Arboles Apartments at 81860 Shadow Palm Avenue. Herrera tried to run away but officers were able to take him into custody soon after.

Herrera was arrested while in possession of the stolen $200, Marshall said in the release. No weapon was recovered and a gun was never actually seen during the robbery.

Herrera was later booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio for robbery and he was being held on $30,000 bail.
