Family of Cathedral City hit-and-run victim speaks out

As family members of a hit-and-run victim continue to mourn, they’re also speaking out. They said 37-year-old Sergio Reynoso rode his bicycle everywhere and that’s what he did Saturday night when a car hit him and just drove away.

The crash happened around 9 p.m. at the Dinah Shore bridge near Whispering Palms in Cathedral City. Reynoso died where he fell.

“How can you leave someone there, lying there offering them no help? How can someone sleep at night?” asked Diana Wackett, the victim’s sister.

“I think it’s the worst thing a family can go through. You try to be strong, but you can’t with something like this. It’s heartbreaking,” said sister Mara Reynoso.

Reynoso was the oldest of five children, a family man with a big heart.

“He’d watch over the kids, and if they needed their bike fixed, he’d fix it for them,” said Wackett.

Loved ones placed candles at the crash site, where we spotted cars racing by.

“I see cars speeding through, this is something that’s continuously happening,” said Wackett.

The family wants Cathedral City to take action, such as more lighting, street cameras, or more bike lanes like the new green marked lanes in Palm Springs. The city invested more than $1 million to ensure motorists and cyclists share the road.

Until then, the family asks for the driver to come forward.

“Do what’s right. Turn yourself in because you’ve made this situation much worse.”

“It could’ve really been an accident, maybe he just got scared and left. We’re not blaming you. We just want closure, that’s what we want,” said Mara Reynoso.

To help pay for funeral costs, Reynoso’s family will host a car wash this Saturday and Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. at Wienerschnitzel at 68785 Ramon Road in Cathedral City.

The family is also collecting donations online with a GoFundMe account.
