Family of bicyclist killed pushes for street safety in Cathedral City
A Cathedral City family won’t stop talking about street safety until the city does something to prevent hit and runs. Now, a ‘Ghost Bike’ may be the first step to awareness.
Sergio Reynoso’s family gathered at the site where a driver hit and killed him while he was riding his bicycle Saturday night. You’ll see a white bike just before the Dinah Shore bridge, near Whispering Palms Trail.
It’s a Ghost Bike; meant to serve as a reminder to the community to slow down and focus on the road ahead.
Three bikers have died in the Coachella Valley this year and four others are recovering from serious injuries. Ghost Bikes, a national organization, was hoping it wouldn’t have to donate another bike to this area any time soon.
Brett Klein with the Palm Springs Bike Coalition said, “Cathedral City has done an amiable job putting bike lanes in this area, but this section here is so fast. They need traffic calming and road diets which is really construction to slow down the speeds.”
“A light would be very important. Maybe even a crosswalk like there is on Cathedral Canyon,” said Sergio’s sister Patty Roman.
The closest crosswalk from where Reynoso was killed was at least a half mile away in each direction.
The incident was ruled a hit and run, but Sergio’s family tells News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 that someone turned themselves in on Tuesday. We’ve contacted the Cathedral City Police Department for more details but the information hasn’t been confirmed by officers yet.
We’ll bring you updates as more information becomes available.
