Pumpkin patches full of gorgeous gourds despite drought

With some schools and businesses having the day off, Columbus Day can be a busy days for pumpkin patches.

Pumpkins need a lot of water to grow. Luckily for Live Oak Pumpkin Patch in Redlands, they have their own well running deep below farm. Other farms might not be so lucky.

“I know a lot of people just down the canyon they have some issues with there crops as well just being able to feed them with water, because of the drought that we are experiencing,” said Tanner Newbry, manager at Live Oak Pumpkin Patch.

In the Midwest, where the majority of the pumpkins are grown for things like pumpkin pie filling, they have lost half of this years crop due to bad weather.

“The only thing I have seen, being here local, is going to different stores and seeing their pumpkin selection from what they import and there pumpkins do look like they have been hit a little bit harder,” said Newbry.

But last year there was a surplus of pumpkins so experts say you shouldn’t see any difference in price for pumpkin products this year.
