President Obama departs Coachella Valley aboard Air Force One
The ASEAN Summit at Sunnylands has wrapped up Tuesday following the second day of conferences, where President Obama met with 10 leaders from southeast Asian countries.
ASEAN leaders arrived to Palm Springs International Airport a little after 3 p.m. for departure. Air Force One took off at about 3:50 p.m. as the President returns to Washington, D.C.
This was the sixth time President Obama visited the Coachella Valley.
President Obama addressed the media at about 2 p.m. during a news conference. He and the ASEAN leaders are calling for a peaceful resolution of the region’s maritime disputes.
He said disputes must be resolved by legal means, including a case brought by the Philippines that challenges China’s sweeping claims over most of the South China Sea.
China has refused to take part in the proceedings, but Obama said parties to the U.N. law of the seas are obligated to respect the ruling, which is expected to be in place later this year.
Just before noon, ASEAN leaders walked outside to meet with President Obama to take a photo in front of a beautiful Coachella Valley backdrop.
After photos were taken, the president said “Fantastic,” turning to those standing next to him, and, “Thank you so much everybody. I hope everybody had a wonderful trip.”
He shook each of their hands and then they filed back inside to conclude the conference.
Roads in Palm Springs are expected to be back open around the airport at 4 p.m. and road closures in Rancho Mirage were lifted around 3 p.m.
