Woman arrested after deadly rollover in Palm Springs

A 24-year-old Perris woman is suspected of DUI after causing a rollover crash in Palm Springs on Saturday which claimed the life of a 27-year-old man from Perris.

The California Highway Patrol issued a reminder on Monday about the importance of wearing seatbelts in the wake of the deadly crash in which all four occupants were ejected from an SUV.

The rollover crash was reported about 4:45 p.m. on southbound Highway 111, north of Overture Drive.

Jayona Marie Robinson was behind the wheel of a 1999 Ford Explorer that traveled into the center median. She corrected to the right, then lost control as the SUV went across lanes and onto the west shoulder, where it overturned, witnesses told CHP investigators.

None of the four occupants in the vehicle were wearing a seat belt and they were all ejected from the SUV, according to CHP.

A 27-year-old man from Perris was pronounced dead after being rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center. The coroner identified him as Lafayette Breedlove.

Robinson was hospitalized with major injuries, and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, as well as drug possession, according to the CHP.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department released Robinson’s booking photo Tuesday morning. She was still wearing clothes from the hospital and had serious injuries to her face.

The other two passengers, a 23-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, both of Compton, suffered minor injuries and also were transported to local hospitals.

The CHP officers issued the following statement: “Seat belts save lives; ensure that everyone in your vehicle is belted appropriately every time you ride.”
