El Mexicali Cafe celebrates 35 years in Coachella Valley

A local family owned restaurant is celebrating a major milestone.

El Mexicali Cafe has been in business in Indio for 35 years. It’s the oldest woman owned Mexican restaurant in the Coachella Valley.

El Mexicali Cafe has a loyal customer base of locals and seasonal people enjoying their homemade style of Mexican food.

The restaurant owners were awarded certificates of recognition from the City of Indio and the State Senate.

The family that owns the business said all the credit goes to their matriarch who opened the restaurant in 1981.

“She dedicated her life, all the recipes are hers. She is the staple to this business. She taught us all and now she passed it down to the generations,” said owner Monica Murguia.

Along with this original location there are two other El Mexicali Cafe locations, another one in Indio and in La Quinta.
