Palm Springs Police K-9 unit to introduce newest four legged officer

The Palm Springs Police Department K-9 Unit will introduce its newest four-legged member tonight to the family of a woman who raised money to buy the dog before she died of cancer.
Vance, who patrols with Officer Matt Crampton, will be introduced to the family of Jill Hutchinson at the 6 p.m. Palm Springs City Council meeting.
Hutchinson, who died of pancreatic cancer in April 2011, “spent several years collecting cans, bottles and soliciting donations to fund a PSPD K-9,” said Palm Springs police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff.
In December 2010, Hutchinson was presented with a city proclamation for raising $1,264 for a new police dog. When she received the proclamation, according to Kovaleff, she said she wanted the dog named Vance after her late father.
Vance began training in May and went on full duty in August, Kovaleff said.
Tonight’s agenda also includes public hearings on aspects of the Museum Market Plaza and Downtown Revitalization development plans, and consideration of giving $50,000 in air service incentive funding for new nonstop Virgin America flights from New York’s JFK International Airport to Palm Springs International Airport.
The meeting will be aired live on Palm Springs Community Television Channel 17, Time-Warner Cable Channel 121 and online at www.palmspringsca.gov.
