Planet Fitness to open in Coachella

When it comes to retail and health clubs, the City of Coachella says it’s underserved.

“There are no gyms in the city currently,” said Mayor Pro Tem Steven Hernandez.

However, that’ll soon change when a new 18,000 square-foot Planet Fitness comes to town. The gym will open in mid-December in the Gateway Center at 50249 Harrison Street across from Cardenas Market.

Planet Fitness offers cardio machines, free weights and an express 30 minute workout circuit.

“We’re the fastest growing chain in the U.S. with over 850 gyms and over 5 million members,” said club owner Sameer Bhatia.

A membership costs $10 a month and will include different amenities 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“We’ll have showers, changing rooms, massage chairs, tanning beds and unlimited fitness training included in your membership,” said Bhatia.

City leaders hope the health club will pump up business in the area and bring in other new businesses.

“Health and wellness is something we’ve been pushing for such a long time. We’ve built new parks and bike way. All of this adds to quality of life.”

A pre-sale office is currently open in the shopping center. For more information, call 760-398-8888 or visit www.planetfitness.com.
