Police pursuit on westbound I-10 ends near Whitewater

A 21-year-old man from Indio was arrested Tuesday morning after leading police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 10. Deputies said the chase began after Roy Becerra allegedly fired a gun at a house in the 82700 block of Castleton drive in North Indio.

Callers from the home reported the shooting around 8:30 a.m. They told officers the suspect fled in a white Chrysler sedan. Nobody in the home was hit, but one bullet struck a car parked in front of the house.

The car Becerra was driving was reported stolen out of Hemet, according to authorities. Indio police spotted him driving west on I-10 through Palm Desert and called CHP to assist with the pursuit.

Officers attempted to pull the suspect over but he continued to speed away.

Around 9:30 a.m., Becerra pulled over just west of Haugen Lehman Road near Whitewater to avoid hitting spike strips in the road. He was booked into the Riverside County Jail on multiple felony charges, according to the sheriff’s department.

Police found a semi-automatic handgun and replica handgun in the car.

Traffic was slow-moving on I-10 for about an hour Tuesday morning, but all lanes of traffic were open at about 9:30 a.m.
