Thief falls through roof; police use cell phone found at crime scene to track down crook

Authorities say a suspected thief fell through the ceiling of a Northern California bike shop and left behind a cell phone in the rubble that led police to catch him.

The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reports Sunday that 25-year-old William James “Jimmy” Dye was in Sonoma County jail on suspicion of Burglary and vandalism.

It wasn’t clear if he’d hired an attorney.

Last week a break-in was discovered at two adjoining businesses in Rohnert Park, Kid Cuts hair salon and Breakaway Bikes.

Both businesses were ransacked, and there was evidence someone had fallen through the ceiling at the bike shop.

Police found a cellphone in the debris that a detective linked to Dye.

He was arrested Friday at the courthouse where he was appearing to face an unrelated theft charge.
