New details released on deadly Marine helicopter crash

Authorities have released new information into the cause of a deadly helicopter crash at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in January.

The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing UH-1Y Huey helicopter helicopter went down during a training exercise.

The San Diego Union Tribune reports the crash was caused by faulty equipment, along with pilot error.

The paper says an improperly installed filter cover led to a loss of oil pressure, which then caused the rotors to stop and the chopper to fall about 200 feet to the ground.

The report also states a low-oil warning went alerted pilots about 15 minutes before the crash.

That should have given the pilots enough time to divert the helicopter and land safely.

Captain Elizabeth Kealey and First Lieutenant Adam Satterfield both died in the wreck.

Both pilots were based at Camp Pendleton.
