Sun City Palm Desert cancels group activities amid resident testing positive for coronavirus

SUN CITY PALM DESERT

Riverside County public health officials have confirmed a new coronavirus case as of Monday, March 16th at Sun City Palm Desert. As of Tuesday morning, there were a total of 15 cases confirmed in Riverside County.

In response, the community association canceled all group activities and urged people to utilize social distancing.

"People are cooperating but obviously this is traumatic for the whole community," Sun City Palm Desert General Manager, Steve Campbell said.

The association has been in contact with the Riverside County Department of Public Health after learning of the infected resident.

"A resident voluntarily told us," Campbell said.

Campbell couldn't say much other than the fact that public health officials are aware. He believes the person is in self-quarantine, but it's unclear where.

"We’ve closed down all of our public meetings, all social activities, our restaurant is only open for takeout only," Campbells said.

The response to the nearly 9,000 residents of ages 55 and older, has been swift. They were notified via email. Those without computers are set to receive hard copies.

"I think we’re doing all we can. From what I’m seeing here, everybody here is doing all we can. Everybody is being very careful," resident Marty Crawford said.

"I think it’s important to know, especially if you think that it’s someone close to where you are. You just want to be more careful because I do a lot of walking in my area," resident Gerry Aldridge said.

Outdoor activities remained open as of Tuesday. Residents were allowed to golf and play tennis, but not in group settings.

"We are the most vulnerable. We may not want to think that way because we’re all young at heart but the fact of the matter is we are, so we’re doing everything we can," Sun City Board of Directors President, Scott Erickson said.

The new guidelines were put into effect until further notice. Meanwhile, officials said employees have been provided sanitation products, and can request masks.

Sun City is possibly in the middle of having to cut hours.
