Four hospitalized after Cathedral City crash; lanes reopened

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. (KESQ) -Four people were hospitalized following a serious early Wednesday morning crash in Cathedral City that investigators say may have involved street racing.

The collision happened just before 4 a.m. near the intersection of Date Palm Drive and Ramon Road.

According to Cathedral City Police Traffic Sergeant Daniel Ames, witnesses reported seeing two vehicles racing westbound on Ramon Road before a BMW collided with a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck.

Police say the BMW and another vehicle were allegedly speeding side-by-side in separate lanes when the pickup truck turned into the path of the BMW, causing the crash.

Four people were transported to the hospital -- including one person from the pickup truck and three people from the BMW.

Authorities say two people suffered serious injuries, while two others sustained concussions.

Investigators also confirmed the driver of the BMW was not wearing a seatbelt and was found in the back seat of the vehicle after the crash.

Police say criminal charges could be filed if investigators determine the drivers were street racing.

All lanes that were previously closed on Ramon Road have since reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
