Rep. Raul Ruiz hosts press conference to discuss DACA
Thousands of people’s lives are on hold as they wait to see what happens to the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA protects undocumented people brought to the united states as children.
Rep. Raul Ruiz, M.D, hosted a press conference with religious community leaders to talk about issues regarding DACA.
One college student spoke with News Channel 3/CBS Local 2’s Lauren Coronado about his journey as a DACA recipient. He asked not to be identified.
“I don’t know any other life than the American life, and the American dream is what i’m pursuing,” he said.
The Trump Administration’s decision to terminate DACA has left that college student and thousands of other DACA recipients waiting for congress to chose their fate.
“These are students and young people who know no other country other than America and love America like the rest of us love America. We need to really come together with law enforcement who supports Dreamers, the business communities, the universities and schools who support dreamers, and really do the morally right thing,” Ruiz said.
Gerald Sharon is a pastor at Hope Lutheran church. He says his faith drives his support for Dreamers.
“As a follower of Jesus, we’re called to stand with the vulnerable, those who are hurting, those who are fearful and to be a voice for those whose voices are being silenced,” Sharon said.
Ruiz points to the Dream Act as a solution.
“The Dream Act is DACA with a five year path to citizenship. Overwhelmingly Republicans and Democrats support protecting Dreamers, so this is our moment, this is our time,” Ruiz said.
