CVUSD set to layoff 70 full-time employees
The Coachella Valley Unified School District is moving forward with a resolution to lay off about 70 full-time employees.
The decision was made during the CVUSD board meeting Thursday night.
Most of the layoffs will consist of K-thru-8 credentialed teachers. An additional 40 teachers will be retiring after the end of the current school year, with the total reduction equaling about 120 employees. Â
"We could have disrupted less educators had we had a more targeted approach. So that is my comment about this. I do understand that it's necessary to have the rifts, the 71 that we are proposing. But the way that we're going to roll this out is what I have an issue with."
The motion passed 4-2.
CVUSD staff received a letter announcing the layoffs, attributing the decision to "declining enrollment" and "working to create fiscal solvency" in the district.
