Two saved in Cabazon swift water rescue

Two people who were trapped on their car in Cabazon have been rescued by a Cal Fire helicopter crew.

The occupants of the vehicle were moved from the top of their car and driven by the flow of water approximately 200 yards to a nearby island in the flood so that the crew could airlift them out. The depth and speed of the water made it difficult to attempt a rescue by land, so the helicopter crews were called in for support.

It was estimated that the water was flowing at 10 miles per hour. The vehicle was swept from the roadway before the helicopter rescue. 27 firefighters, four engine companies, and two helicopters were called to the scene to assist with the rescue.

The two victims saved from the vehicle were transported to an area hospital by ground ambulance.

The vehicle is a green Ford Ranger.

The incident occurred at Elm Street near the Arrowhead Plant in Cabazon. Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department are on scene as well as Cal Fire crews.

Extensive flooding has been reported on streets in Cabazon, Banning, and Beaumont.
