Defending BNP Paribas Open champion del Potro withdraws from tournament
The defending men’s champion of the BNP Paribas Open has withdrawn from this year’s tournament due to a knee injury, according to a BNP Paribas Open news release sent out Wednesday.
Last year, Juan Martin del Potro felled Roger Federer in the tournament final.
“I am truly disappointed that I will not be able to return to the BNP Paribas Open to defend my title,” said Juan Martin del Potro. “It is one of my favorite tournaments, and I have incredible memories from last year, but my doctors have advised me to rest. I hope to be back on court soon.”
Juan Martin del Potro is the second major injury-related dropout this year; just two weeks ago, it was announced that Maria Sharapova would not enter this year’s draw due to a right shoulder injury.
Del Potro defeated Federer last year 6-4, dropping the tennis great 6-4,7-6 (8), 7-6 (2).
“I fully understand how difficult it can be to deal with injuries, and that coming back from them is not always a straightforward process,” said Tournament Director Tommy Haas. “We wish Juan Martin all the best in his recovery, and hope to see him back at the BNP Paribas Open next year.”
