Palm Springs officials recommend ‘coyote hazing’ to save pets from attacks

An increase in the number of reported coyote sightings in Palm Springs led city animal control officers today to recommend ways that residents can protect themselves and their pets.

The increased sightings are not isolated to any particular part of the city and do not indicate an increased threat to humans, according to city officials, who said Palm Springs Animal Control is aware of several instances in which dogs or cats were killed by coyotes.

Although naturally fearful of humans, coyotes are drawn to residential neighborhoods in search of food and water. ” Hazing” is the most effective practice for avoiding and discouraging the animals, according to city officials, who said trapping and euthanizing coyotes have not been found to be effective options for decreasing or eliminating populations.

” There are a wide variety of hazing options residents can use if you and your pet are approached by a coyote, including yelling and waving your arms, using whistles, air horns, bells, or homemade noisemakers, spraying a coyote with water, vinegar water or pepper spray or throwing small objects in
the direction of the coyote until it leaves the area entirely,” according to a statement released by the city’s communications director.

Experts recommend if you encounter a coyote to never run from a coyote.
