Vacationer subdues alleged burglar in Palm Springs

A man in town on vacation managed to thwart a would-be burglar who had broken into the vacation rental he was staying in with his spouse in Palm Springs.

At 4:45 a.m., a man and woman staying at home on the 100 block of Canyon Rock Road reported that an intruder had broken into their bedroom. The intruder, now identified as 27-year-old Edward O’Brien, tried to flee the rental, but was subdued and held down by the husband, according to a Palm Springs Police Department news release.

PSPD officers arrived a short time later and took O’Brien into custody. The 27-year-old reportedly had stolen jewelry and miscellaneous items, as well as methamphetamine. He was booked into Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on for burglary of an inhabited dwelling, possession of a controlled substance for sales, and violation of parole.

O’Brien was on parole for a prior home invasion charge.

The man who subdued O’Brien did not sustain any injuries.

Police are not seeking any additional suspects.
