Fire at Palm Desert business park rips through family-owned business

An early morning fire broke out Thursday morning at an industrial park in Palm Desert, causing extensive damage to a family-owned business.

Macc Upholstery is now red-tagged and marked as unoccupiable after a fire sparked after 4:30 a.m on Joni Drive, near Cook Street.

Angel Gudino, manager of the upholstery shop, said when he got on scene, the fire was burning “out of control” and firefighters were on the roof.

“The flames were like 10-15 feet up out of the roof,” Gudino said. The cause is still under investigation.

“To know how it started, I’m almost kind of clueless because 4 in the morning is kind of random,” he said.

Gudino’s father owns the business, building it from the ground up.

“He’s sad. He started it in 2001 here, but he’s been at it since he was 16,” he said.

The damage is extensive, with almost nothing salvageable. ” We lost sewing machines, cutting machines, compressors, all our air guns,” Gudino said.

The water damage was apparent as well — with the ceiling coming apart and the floor of the business completely flooded.

“Everything anything you could imagine — we kind of just got a whole new shipment a couple days ago. Everything is gone,” he said.

No one was injured in the fire. Other businesses in the park remain without power Thursday night.
