Rudy Giuliani Expected To Help Honor Heroes At Gala

Former New York City mayor and presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani will be the guest of honor at Desert Christian Academy’s annual gala tonight.

The school’s 22nd annual auction event, themed “A Heroes’ Welcome,” will be at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort in Indian Wells, school spokeswoman Tara Bravo said.

The auction will support Desert Christian Academy’s Tuition Assistance Program, which allows students from different economic backgrounds to attend the school in Bermuda Dunes, Bravo said.

“Mayor Giuliani is the ultimate example of heroism, which is our central theme this year,” said Dave Fulton, Desert Christian Academy’s founder. “We will be honoring everyday heroes from law enforcement, fire and safety fields, among others. We felt Mayor Giuliani was the ideal person to help us do that.”

Giuliani, mayor during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.

“It is entirely appropriate to honor heroes and heroism, and will provide so many great role models for the students at Desert Christian Academy,” Giuliani said. “I am grateful for the invitation, and look forward to helping instill the virtues of heroism and courage in these fine young student citizens.”

Former first lady Laura Bush spoke at last year’s Desert Christian Academy gala, which netted more than $375,000 and drew 600 people, Bravo said.

Desert Christian Academy has about 500 students from preschool to 12th grade. Reservations can be made by calling (760) 345-2848.
