Search ends for missing hiker

Search and rescue of missing hiker in Joshua Tree National Park ends with deadly results.

Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies got a report on Wednesday, at 3:24 p.m., of a missing hiker in the Jumbo Rock Campground area of the Joshua Tree National Park.

Park rangers, search and rescue personnel, and a CHP helicopter searched the area for the hiker.

Shortly after 9:00 p.m., search and rescue members located a deceased hiker in the area.

Thermal Station investigators responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

The hiker’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department would like to take this opportunity to remind outdoor enthusiasts, enjoying our beautiful desert, to adequately prepare for the extreme weather conditions during the summer months.

Make sure you have plenty of water, are dressed appropriately, and have a fully charged cellular phone. Make sure to provide friends and family with information about your itinerary in the event you become lost or stranded.

This will aid rescuers in locating you and returning you to safety.
