Preliminary hearing rescheduled for hate crime suspects

Update: 4/27/16: The preliminary hearing for the two men accused in a hate-related attack that left a married gay seriously injured, with one of them dying since the attack, has been delayed until May 12.

February 4, 2016: A felony settlement conference for the two men accused of attacking a gay married couple in Palm Springs last November has been rescheduled to February 23.

One of the victims, LGBT activist George Zander, has since died but it’s still unknown if the attack had anything to do with his death.

November 12, 2015:

A second suspect has been arrested in the alleged elder abuse and hate crime in Palm Springs that left a gay married couple with serious injuries in an assault.

Christopher James Carr, a 30-year-old from Desert Hot Springs, was taken into custody Monday night after the Desert Hot Springs Police Department arrested him on a warrant in the 66500 block of 8th Street.

The warrant was issued on November 20 following an extensive investigation, Palm Springs police Lt. Mike Kovaleff said in a release.

Carr was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on alleged violations of felony battery causing serious injury, aggravating factor enhancement, great bodily injury to elder enhancement, hate crime enhancement, felony elder abuse and a enhancement of bodily injury to a person over 70, according to the release.

The second suspect, 35-year-old Keith Edward Terranova of Palm Springs, was arrested on November 11. He pleaded not guilty to three felony charges. Terranova is charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon or by force likely to cause great bodily injury.

During the defendant’s arraignment at the Larson Justice Center in
Indio, a judge lowered Terranova’s bail to $80,000, down from $250,000.

Police arrested Terranova Wednesday, November 11 and booked him into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

George and Chris Zander were assaulted on November 1 after leaving Hunter’s nightclub on Arenas Road. George Zander suffered a broken hip and is still recovering.

Chris Zander suffered a concussion and needed staples on the back of his head.

Police said there are no more outstanding suspects in the assault.
