City Of Coachella, Organizations To Hold Citizenship Fair
COACHELLA – The City of Coachella wants to spread the word.
“What we’re initiating is a citizenship drive that will assist in those efforts to bring about greater attention to the tremendous need for federal immigration policy,” says Coachella mayor Eduardo Garcia.
Government groups, labor unions and religions organizations are joining forces, trying to get people to come out of the shadows and apply forU.S. citizenship. Another step in the fight towards comprehensive immigration reform.
“Immigration reform is a real intricate component to economic recovery in this country. This is why I believe it’s important. From a standpoint of our community a citizenship drive is key,” Garcia says.
He also says one of their main goals is to get people to participate in the democratic process.
“We have individuals in this community who have been here, part of the fabric of this community more than five years. They’ve been following the rules of this country and now have become eligible to become citizens,” says Garcia.
“The main problem they face is the question of money given the current economic situation. So, we don’t think that we’re going to find any fear to come and attend. Again, the problem, the question of money, prevents them from coming forward,” says Julio Marroquin with the Laborers’ International Union of North America.
The event will take place at the Martin Ortiz community center on March6th from8 in the morning until4PM. Legal advice and assistance will be provided free of charge.
