CHP: Deadliest Year In More Than A Decade

The deaths of five California Highway Patrol officers in the line of duty in less than two months has left some experts asking if it’s time for a review of the agency’s stop procedures.

The toll makes 2010 already the deadliest year for the CHP in more than a decade. The two most recent fatalities happened Sunday, with two officers struck and killed on roadsides.

CHP Citizen Oversight Committee member Ken Trough says he will ask the nine-member panel to review the fatalities to see if stop tactics played a role.

Officer Brett Oswald was killed Sunday while waiting for a tow truck to remove an abandoned car from a road near Paso Robles in San Luis Obispo County.

Officer Justin McGrory was also killed Sunday when a car veered onto the shoulder and hit him during a traffic stop in Barstow.
