I-10 median gate barriers aim to improve safety

Caltrans announced the locations of the I-10 median gate barriers as part of the joint I-10 Emergency Plan agreement.

Median gate barriers were installed at five locations along I-10 to help mitigate the impact of major closures and incidents and to improve public safety during emergencies, according to officials.

The project was completed on June 6 but Caltrans released some specifics about the improvements on Friday.

Median gate barrier locations:

1.1 miles east of the Hargrave Street undercrossing in Banning
0.1 miles west of Malki Road in Cabazon
1.4 miles east of Main Street in Cabazon
2.3 miles west of Haugen-Lehmann Way in Whitewater
1.2 miles west of route 10/62 separation near Palm Springs

This 19-mile section of I-10, between Palm Springs and Banning, has experienced several accidents causing lengthy traffic delays, leaving drivers stranded without an exit from the interstate. Officials said the newly installed median gate barriers are one of the many tools the CHP can use to divert traffic around the accident area.

In addition to the median gate barriers, Caltrans said the I-10 Emergency Plan also includes various road developments, changeable message signs, vehicle detection stations, closed-circuit TV cameras, and a multi-agency implementation plan.

The I-10 Emergency Plan is an agreement between Riverside County, CHP, Morongo Band of Mission Indians, Coachella Valley Association of Governments, Riverside County Transportation Commission, the city of Palm Springs, the city of Banning and Caltrans.
