Downey officer wounded, suspect killed in shootout in San Bernardino

A Downey police officer has been wounded and another man killed in a shootout during a Southern California drug investigation.

Authorities say the Downey officer was with a task force that was watching a San Bernardino home Thursday afternoon. Task force members were met by gunfire when they decided to approach.

San Bernardino police Lt. Rich Lawhead says the officers returned fire and killed a suspect in their drug investigation. His name hasn’t been released.

Lawhead says a Downey officer was shot in the arm, buttock and bulletproof vest during the confrontation and is hospitalized in stable condition but it’s not clear whether he was wounded by a suspect or friendly fire.

Several other people were detained.
