Shops, artists cash in on Labor Day travelers

Some shops in downtown Palm Springs saw a big boost in business over the holiday weekend.

“It has been awesome I had a great weekend and we needed it because it’s been very slow,” said Marsha Robinson owner of Mars’ Creations.

Streets were packed and people were spending cash in downtown Palm Springs over the Labor Day weekend. Including buying some locally made jewelry from Robinson.

“I have seen over the last two years more business during the summer, but if you have a business downtown you kind of have to save your nest egg for the summer,” said Robinson.

Chester Overlock opened his store, Current Home Sustainable Living, a few weeks ago. He sells locally made art.

“The season is just kicking off, we just opened up last month so for the first month there was nobody shopping, and luckily they are starting to come out,” said Overlock.

“Anytime you get exposure to your work and get a chance to sell it is good, so I am excited about the upcoming season and this looks like it’s going to be one of our better one’s in a while,” said Thomas Cain, a local artist who sells portraits at Current Home Sustainable Living.

Shop owners KESQ talked with today were excited at the types of people they saw this weekend, lots of younger couples who are ready to spend some money.

“I’m sure it is really important for them to have us come in and spend some money we are definitely trying to come in and help the out so yea they have cool stuff,” said Los Angeles native Evelyn Bojorquez who was shopping in Palm Springs.
