Suspected DUI driver causes wrong-way crash on Hwy 86

A 74-year-old man from Indio is facing DUI charges after he caused a wreck while driving the wrong way on the 86 expressway Thursday night.

Sidney Lincon wasn’t arrested because he was taken to the hospital for moderate injuries he sustained in the crash. Charges will be filed out of custody by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, according to the release.

Police were called to the crash just north of Avenue 50 in Coachella at about 7 p.m. Officers with the Coachella Police Department said Sidney Lincon was driving a black Lincoln sedan southbound in the northbound lanes.

The driver of a semi-tractor had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision but the Lincoln ended up striking the rear left wheels of the truck, totaling the sedan, officers said in the release.

A pickup truck was also hit by the semi-tractor when the driver swerved to avoid the Lincoln.

Officers said the investigation determined alcohol was a factor in the crash. The drivers of the semi truck and pick up truck weren’t injured in the collision.

The investigation continues and anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Coachella Police Department at 760-863-8990.
